Anyone wanting more information on the Battles for Cassino and Anzio is recommended to read:

Parker, Matthew.  Monte Cassino, The story of the hardest-fought battle of World War Two, ISBN 0-7553-1328-3.  Well written. The author recreates the battle using first-hand accounts of veterans.  A good read.

Ford, Ken.  Cassino 1944.  Breaking the Gustav Line, ISBN 1-84176-623-2.  A beautifully illustrated account of the four battles in the Osprey Series.

Forty, George.  Battle for Monte Cassino, ISBN 0-7110-3024-3.  Succinct, easy to read and some excellent photographs.  Highly recommended.

Smith, E D.  The Battles for Cassino, ISBN 0-7153-9421-5 and Even the Brave Falter, ISBN 0-7091-6819-5.  Brigadier E D Smith took part in the battles as a 20 year old subaltern in the 7th Gurkha Rifles.  With photographs and first-hand accounts of the campaign, he provides a detailed and moving professional analysis of the battle.  Well written for the military.  Poignant.

Clark, Lloyd.  Anzio, the Friction of War, ISBN 978-0-7553-1421-8.  A gripping read full of remarkable experiences.  A well written history.

Ellis, John.  Cassino, the Hollow Victory, ISBN 1-85410-916-2.  For the serious bookworm.  This masterpiece is the Cassino ‘bible’.  

Piekalkiewicz, Janusz.  Cassino.  Anatomy of the Battle, ISBN 085613-021-4.  A uniquely rounded study of this titanic struggle.  150 photographs and maps complete this excellent record. 

 

Majdalanay, Fred.  Cassino, Portrait of a Battle, ISBN 0-304-35232-2.  He fought as an infantry officer at Cassino.  A classic.

Zaloga, Steven J.  Anzio 1944. The beleaguered beachhead, ISBN 1-84176-913-4.  A superbly illustrated account in the Osprey series of the five months from landings to breakout.

D’Este, Carlo.  Fatal Decision: Anzio and the battle for Rome, IBSN 0-00-637926-5.  D'Este chronicles with ruthless clairity the mistakes, mishaps and misunderstandings that culminated in a monumental error of judgement.

                                                                                                                             

Jackson, WGF.  The Battle for Italy.  General William Jackson's brilliant description of the challenges in Italy.  Particularly strong on the Cassino/Anzio link.  Would appeal to those with military experience.

 

Bond, Harold L.  Return to Cassino.  A personal reflection from a young officer with 36 US Infantry Division.  A vivid picture of the very essence of war.                                                                                                                      

                                                                                                                                   

Shepperd, GA.  The Italian Campaign 1943-45, BSN 213-76404-0.  A comprehensive assessment of the battle for Italy.  The chapters on Cassino and Anzio are excellent.

                                                                                                                                 

Dharm, Pal.  The Campaign in Italy 1943-45.  The official history of the Indian Armed Forces' significant contribution to the battle for Italy.  Superb maps.
